Introduction[]

After the conclusion of Symphony No. 5, Steve Martin arrives and notes to the audience how amazing it was that many of the film's featured musicians were playing for the very first time thanks to what he refers to as his "two week master musician home study course". After welcoming the audience to Fantasia 2000, he then explains it had been more than 60 years since Walt Disney and his artists teamed up with Leopold Stokowski to create the original Fantasia, revealing its working title of "The Concert Feature". He goes on to explain the history of Fantasia and its original intention; Fantasia was meant to be a perpetual work in progress - each time it was re-released, the audience would experience some new pieces along with some old familiar favorites. But that idea fell by the wayside, until 2000. He then hands the proceedings over to violinist Itzhak Perlman to introduce the next segment.

Perlman explains to the audience that when they hear a title like "Pines of Rome", they might think of Rome's tree-lined streets and romantic ruins. However, the Disney animators thought of something completely different when they heard the music. He then introduces the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, as they proceed to perform Ottorino Respighi's Pines of Rome.
